Pangaia tracksuit

Taking the world by storm, Pangaia is a science materials company on a mission to save the planet. With their first drop of colourful and sustainable tracksuits selling out in 15 minutes, this brand is sure to become a cult favourite.

The team behind the brand is “an extensive group of leading scientists, technologists and designers”, who have banded together to create bold and innovative hoodies, sweats and puffer jackets, using advanced tech and bio-engineered materials.

I’m talking seaweed fibre, botanical dyes and flower down. Sound interesting? Let me tell you more …

Pangaia pioneered the breakthrough technology FLWRDWN™. This is a fully biodegradable down substitute created with wild flowers. With this material they make their extremely cosy looking puffer jackets that are breathable, hypoallergenic and cruelty-free. This might have to be my winter coat purchase of the year.

Their bright and equally cosy looking tracksuits are not to be confused with any average tracksuit. They are made of seaweed fibre. Derived from saltwater seaweed which grows in abundance in natural ocean habitats, requiring no pesticides or excessive land and water use. The fibre biodegrades seamlessly, so once you’ve worn your tracksuit to death, it won’t be hanging around like a bad smell for the next 20 years.

Thinking back to the 2040 documentary, this seaweed fibre particularly sparked my interest. In the doco, their segment on Marine Permaculture discussed how seaweed is known to absorb extraordinary amounts of carbon dioxide. It has been found that if as little as 9% of our oceans worldwide were used for farming seaweed, we could remove about 53 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, per year. So perhaps Pangaia is onto something here.

Now, did your mother ever tell you the brighter the colour, the more artificial it is? Ours sure did. But when it comes to Pangaia, oh how she is wrong. Their brightly coloured tracksuits are all dyed with botanical dyes, made from food waste and plant materials such as fruit, vegetables and flowers. See a full list of what each colour is made with here

I don’t want to harp on but I can’t finish this article without mentioning that all Pangaia products are packaged in TIPA packaging, a part bio-based, plastic alternative which fully disappears within 24 weeks!
