These Starts-ups are revolutionizing the fashion industry
Fashion as we know it is changing and these start ups are leading the way.
Words: JanaWardrop
Sustainable fashion is …. in fashion (sorry had to do it) and the fashion industry is adopting more and more sustainable practices every day. Leading the way are some extremely cool start-ups that are pushing the boundaries of sustainable fashion innovation. Here are eight of our favourite:
Agraloop
Agraloop collects waste from food production like flax, banana, hemp and pineapple then transforms them into fibres to use for fashion production. They are new and innovative fibres are processed using regular cotton machinery but offers a biodegradable alternative to classic fibres.
Reflaunt
Reflaunt is a technology that promotes ‘circular economy’ by connecting brands with the secondary market. The technology allows customers of brands to resell, donate or recycle their past purchases directly back to the e-commerce site of the brand with the click of a button. The sustainable fashion startup has the backing of some of the biggest names in fashion, like Vogue Fashion Editor Giovanna Battaglia and CEO of Vestaire Collective Max Bittner, so you know its the real deal.
RePack
The thing about fashion that gets me the most is the excessive amounts of plastic packaging that is used in the storage and shipping of products. RePack is here to fix that. They have created a system where fashion packaging is reused. Once the customer has received their item, they send the packaging back to the store so they can re use it for future orders.
Tersus
Tersus provides a sustainable alternative to dry cleaning. Instead of using tons of water and chemicals, it uses a recycled fluid Co2 to clean clothes. Using this innovative technology, brands can achieve a better and deeper clean that doesn’t damage the clothes as much as normal dry cleaning, whilst also saving on energy and natural resources.
The Fabricant
Now this is fashion of the future. The fabricant is a digital fashion house that specialises in digital design and animation of photo-real 3D fashion that can be used in digital fashion editorials, digital fashion shows and more. The only resources used here are data and pixels.
Unspun
Unspun is an on-demand apparel company that uses 3D scanning and fit algorithms to digitally generate clothes that perfectly fit consumers. The company uses 3D information to then weave the clothing. This technique eliminates inventory, reduces wasteful processes and ultimately increases the wearability, therefore lifespan of garments.
Unmade
Unmade mission is to minimise the waste that’s caused by overproduction. Their software allows shoppers to customise designs on retailers’ ecommerce platforms to create unique one-off pieces. Their system then sends the unique designs directly to the brands factory to be made on machinery that programs itself to make the designs according to code. Since launching in 2014, Unmade has partnered with fashion labels including Opening Ceremony, Farfetch and cyclewear brand Rapha to create unique products to order
Provenance
Provenance empowers brands to make the sourcing and impact behind their products completely transparent. Using blockchain technology Provenance traces the details of each stage of a product’s production with a unique ID. While new information can be added to the chain, potentially meaning a customer could add their time with it before passing on to a new owner, past information cannot be tampered with.
